English Translatior's note: Joshua Wong, convenor and founder of student activist group Scholarism, wrote the following piece to In Media on 1st October 2014. The translator made an extract below.

After being detained for 46 hours, Wong walked from Admiralty to Causeway Bay. He walked passed various sites crowds occupied. The scenes unfolding was out of his expectation and probably everyone. He is both thrilled and worried.

Every Hong Konger is the leader

“I deny to be crowned a “hero”. When the fellow Hong Kongers were defending against pepper spray and tear gas, he could only sat in detainment. He felt impotent. Compared to the effort of Hong Kongers who initiated the occupation peacefully, he felt ashamed.

As such, the Umbrella Revolution has no leader. Even the initiators of Occupy Central or Hong Kong Federation of Students could not stop the revolution. Every Hong Kong citizen takes the lead.

Bear in mind our demands

There are doubts about some people come because of “herd mentality”. I can assert Hong Kongers step out to occupy is because they have their own political demands. Participants must have their own judgment in civil autonomy. My demand is: “Civil nomination / withdrawal of National People’s Congress’s decision (on Hong Kong’s political reform) / resignation of C.Y. Leung”.
I hope every participant can bear in mind our demands. We occupy not because of self-gratification. We do not need to be uptight all the time, but please remember the occupation is not only an assembly, but a civil disobedience movement.

The scale of occupation has exceeded far beyond our imagination to over 200,000 participants at its peak, which we have not enough resources to accommodate yet. I am sorry but we are trying to resolve these.

Direction of occupation

Sitting on the streets without police is not meaningless. The crowd is our most valuable capital. Imagine you were C.Y. Leung, seeing a sea of people from Central to Causeway Bay calling for your resignation, you would be frightened. Our self-autonomy and mobilisation will help obtain genuine universal suffrage and the resignation of C.Y. Leung from Beijing.

Lastly, please invite more friends to come to the three main locations: Admiralty, Causeway Bay and Mong Kok. We have to hold fast to our fronts. I believe a hundred thousand occupying the streets on the National Day of China will press for C.Y. Leung’s direct response.”
