Thomas Friedman promotes state-sponsored terrorism

Three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Thomas Friedman, who is well known in mainland China and Hong Kong, just published an article in the New York Times in support of Israel's killing civilians as he believed that such killing would "educate" Hamas (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/14/opinion/14friedman.html?_r=1). Note that Friedman has a record of advocating wars to solve problems--from Kosovo in the 1990s to the Iraq war to all the wars that Israel has waged. He even pleaded, "Give war a chance," in one of his warmongering columns.

It would be nice to greet this blood-thirsty American war propagandist with a big protest next time he visits Hong Kong.

Americans' hearts turned to stone as well

Fear is the most powerful motivator indeed. Just yesterday Bush defended his war crimes by arguing that everything he had done was successful in preventing another terrorist attack. You talk about the tens of thousands of innocent civilians who died, he countered that it's a small price to pay. Similarly, the US Congress' unwavering support for Israel's "defensive war" was based on the same line of logic: Civilian deaths are unavoidable, but it's all their leaders' fault. Once the American leaders became successful in dehumanizing the other side, in escalating the fear of the unfamiliar, and in promoting the belief that the worst is about to happen if we don't act now, they got a license to do whatever they want, with a clear conscience (subjectively speaking). As far as the common people in the US and Israel are concerned, they feel safe under strong leaders who can protect them like parents protecting children. After their hearts turn to stone, they feel good and can continue with their daily business such as watching The American Idol.

奥斯陆“和平进程”留下的最大问题是，它将一场合法的民族解放运动转变为一场讨价还价的“和谈”，所有媒体报道给人的印象都是，以方和巴方是处在平等地位的两个协商者，但实情却是一个膘肥体壮、奸诈狡猾的拳击手和一个骨瘦如柴的弱者对决，后者吃尽苦头。历史上从未有过哪一个民族，可以在占领者拒不退出其领土的情况下，仍然可以通过单纯的外交谈判来摆脱占领。包括联合国决议在内的国际法已经给巴以冲突下了“判决”，所谓“国际社会”的任务是执行判决，而不是站在加害人一方，以无休止的空洞“和谈”许诺和遥不可及的美好前景来玩弄被害人。在阿拉法特逝世四周年的时候，我们迫切需要对巴以冲突重新定性：这不是一段温文尔雅的“和平进程”，而是一个被压迫民族从一个殖民主义国家统治下求解放的斗争。
