Just want to add: A lot of people also try to show their sophistication by saying, "There's no such thing as right or wrong; everything depends on your point of view." Moral relativism, or a certain degree of cynicism, is commonly considered a sign of maturity. It's pretty tragic.

Also, people in the establishment have a tendency to ignore and to encourage others to ignore history because it's convenient for them to maintain the status quo so long as mistakes in the past are buried and forgotten. Of course they won't say that plainly. The most common way to package this attitude is to pretend to be forgiving. "Let's forget and forgive. Let bygones be bygones," they say. This way not only can they achieve the purpose of spreading ignorance among the governed, they also get the credit for being nice, kind, and compassionate. This is a universal pattern, definitely not something unique to Chinese rulers. Just look at Obama. Every time people demand that war crimes committed by the previous administration be investigated, he waves his hand and says, "Let's look forward, not backward." (Just google "Look forward," "not backward," and "Obama," you'll get tons of hits.) It's variation on the same theme sung by people who don't want to face the facts about June 4.
