Dear Sir / Madame,

We should like to express our deep concern regarding the Council's decision to close down MediACT, South Korea's first public media center.

As an independent media organization in Hong Kong, our members visited MediACT in 2005 and 2008 respectively and find the center contributing both to the development of media education and to the democratization of media system in South Korea. MediACT's work has inspired a large number of public and independent media organizations in Asia and all over the world. The shutting down of the center would hinder the development of citizen media sector, imply a setback to the freedom of expression and democracy in South Korea. In fact in the past few year, MediACT has successfully promoted Korean's indepedent film and video to the world and earned its reputation among the global independent and public media community.

We therefore request the KOFIC to reverse the decision and continue supporting the operation of MediACT center. We condemn any governmental act that destroys the independent media environment in South Korea.
