Sorry! A bit 'out of track'... :-P

Excuse me, my last response was not directly related to this passage, just a bit of thinking after reading the whole thing. It is good though, just a bit weird for me, not exactly matching my impression towards CU.
I have made a vow to myself, unless I will die from hunger, I will never take a job offered by HKU, not to say studying there. Still, even after reading this, I still dream of the school life in CU, as I know how great it is, just...... Never knew such a piece of nearly fogotten history, thanks for telling us anyway!

Who exactly can tell me concisely what is the problem of 殖民地?

From the root of history, 殖民地 has been the places (more rural areas normally at the far far beginning) where people migrated to after their own city (or country) being too crowded (or other political reasons sometimes). That is where the name '殖民'地 comes from. It is the whole idea of 'suburbanisation' in the old world. This old version of suburbanisation is then changed to something quite different in people's impressions, in their mind, but not by nature. The only different is the growth of 'new-nationalism', as I call it, when people started to reject 'foreigners' and try to distinguish themselves from 'invaders', no matter whether the government has used violent to conqure the land or not, not matter they have implemented racism or not.
I am not good at history, I know clearly, and that's why I am asking such a 'stupid', 'silly' question, which most people who have studied history should be able to answer easily WITHOUT THINKING. Here, what I want is, try to THINK carefully before you tell me the answer, then, I suppose I will get not only 1, but perhaps 10, 20 different answers from the bottom of your hearts, not from textbooks......
Please don't misunderstand me, I am not a supporter of colonisation. However, when we think about it, Chinese are conquring the world with a different method, should we be the biggest followers of 殖民主義? As China is a bit too "crowded" (the writer is reluctant to mention other more likely and more important reasons here, please consider...), Chinese are found all other the world nowadays. At the end of the day, who is invading the others' boundary? Who is eroding the others' cultures? ~Let’s think about it together, my dear friends.~ When tons and tons of people are speaking fluent English, how many British know Chinese at all (this phenomenon is regarded as favourable to us in the point of view of the writer, which can be discussed in the future seperately)? So, when we are capable of (whether we do that or not is another problem) understanding their culture thoroughly, we can still keep ours as a secret; so, who is colonising whom?
