Where is the “on-the-spot site”? (英文版)

回應獨立媒體呼籲,希望讓外國團體了解更香港本地觀點,特此翻譯成英文。如有錯漏,敬請提點。

Carrying my camera, with chocolate, salted water, alcohol, cloth, towel and grey cap in my bag, I went to the site where the protest parade was.

After the whole day, I wonder, where is the “on-the-spot site” after all?

Participating in slogan-shouting, waving and greeting protestors, breaking out and running with the “Armored Tank” group in the thriving town centre, lending a fire to Mr. Long Hair on the flyover towards the protest area’s trap, holding a Korean woman’s hand with blessing when the Korean were jumping into the sea. When the so-called “mobs”, so-called “journalists” and so-called “anti-riot police” were roughing and tumbling into a mess, pulling and dragging each other, and pepper spray spurting wildly, I held my camera, installed the film, and adjusted the diaphragm and camera shutter. What was I actually “recording”?

Where should I stand to take the view? How much should the depth of field be? Where should the focus be? There, there, there, and there also had something happening at the same time, at such a moment.

On the way from the Victoria Park to the “assigned protest area”, I kept watching whether the upstairs opposite the street had any monitor. Within the troop, my used my far-sighted vision to watch the police’s arrangements and movements over another end of the street, also kept checking on the so-called “plainclothes” policemen’s act. Just because I was carrying a camera, I could deservedly shuttle through the narrow passages between the audiences besides pedestrian paths, the police, journalists and the protest parade; to take photos of the protestors and their flags, the police’s troop formation, workers who were still working on the street, also the on-the-guard posture of the so-called journalists who acted as if facing a formidable enemy; as well as using a photo-taking gesture to keep the Korean farmers away from the disturbs of “anti-monitor shooting” by other so-called journalists and HKPA helpers…… What kind of “participation” does such type of recording belong to?

What was the participation?

The government and the mass media are tactically composing and directing a ridiculous comedy, using the distorted imagination on mobs/poor farmers/rough fellows to further develop its “evidence” on the ‘stable is prior to everything’ notion. When citizens, agents, secretaries, teachers, cooks are too busy to look into the original facts and principles, the “Professional” class’s abstract words which derail with reality (it’s also the reason why), become a kind of reasonable and traceable discourse pattern. We all hear this kind of discourse pattern everyday. There’s no difference between sliming products advertisements and the Legislative Council’s discussion on Soundbite. It’s so over-rational, over-scientific, so simple and regular that it fits perfectly with our city which also runs in such principles.

“Coming with the purpose to make trouble, foreign ‘mobs’ carried out their ‘duty’, i.e. disturbed the city’s order. Road blocks, traffic jams, air or ship service’s suspension, closure of shops in Causeway Bay, revenue drop of those who opened, blocks on cafe’s beautiful window scene, etc. The Korean are just making troubles from nothing, and need so many people to take care of them……” Then Security Minister went on TV program to talk about why he supports Mr. Tsang’s political reformation bill. On the other hand, the “lawyers party” is striving for publicity, while other party have their medicine caring group explaining how to prevent H5N1 bird flu on the Roadshow. Everything is traceable. The survey results without details on methodology are being broadcasted everyday. Political program, speech, shows, and confrontmation, etc., all are traceable and reasonable, and never step out of the caged frame of reality, ration and peace.

Everything out of this discourse and imaginary frame is perceived as incredible, violating the society, or ridiculously funny, so that we don’t even know the Korean left wing’s deep-rooted resistance tradition, so that we don’t even know the recent anti-WTO protests in Indonesia, so that we don’t even know that there was Bangladeshi farmers’ representatives with the protesting parade, so that we can even stand local workers unions’ leaders to mark themselves off from Korean farmers’ “violent and radical resistance”, not giving any support nor helping them negotiating with the police, but meanwhile talk about solidarity with journalists……

So that we do not dare to imagine, how workers, farmers and the unemployed live under cities’ abstract rules, threats and torments everyday.

The actual meaning of clash between Korean farmers and the police is just that it dramatically exhibited our government’s manpower, material power, police power and violent power under threatening fear, so as its monopolistic “patent” to use armed force, as well as the weak unity and poor creativity among our city’s social movements.

Neither Marsh Road, Han Hing Road, Victoria Park, Tsim Shai Tsui or Tin Shui Wai is the “on-the-spot” site。

”On-the-spot” site is the TV box within our brains.
