’沉默的騎行’ Ride of Silence
歷史起源：
活動的舉行，是來自於美國兩位感情很好的友人︰Larry Schwartz 和 Chris Phelan 。
Larry Schwartz 原是 UMCA Mileage 挑戰活動的參加者，於2002 年，Mr. Schwartz 在該年錄得 22,980 里的自行車總里程，到了2003年Mr. Schwartz 亦一直保持領先的位置。但不幸地，於2003 年 5 月 4 日，Mr. Schwartz 被一架校巴的倒後鏡擊中並令他失去性命，他的好友，Chris Phelan 為以紀念 Mr. Schwartz 和令公眾提高道路的安全意識。Mr Phelan 透過電話聯絡和 email，令朋友們聚集起來，於當年5 月21日，在德州達拉斯市 (Dallas) 舉辦原為一次性的活動。2003的’沉默的騎行’ ，當時共有 1000 人響應活動。
時至今日，每年均有再次舉辦活動，參加地區亦增加至18個國家、50個州份、合共 296個城市、騎行人數達至 7,925人。
今年五月十九日，晚上七時三十分，全世界數以百計城市的單車人士，將會參與這項單車騎行，為悼念在單車意外中的死者。希望藉沉默地騎行來喚醒公眾對騎單車人士的尊重與關注。
A little history of this ride and how it came to be....
The 2003 Ride of Silence™ at White Rock Lake in Dallas drew 1,000 cyclists through word of mouth and email communication over a period of only ten days. There was no registration and no fees. Local media reported the ride to be incredibly moving as these cyclists rode in silence, occasionally wiping away a tear or patting a friend on the back.
Chris Phelan, a friend of Mr. Schwartz and the person responsible for starting this initiative, thought the ride was a one-time event. However, as word got out other cyclists began to contact him with a desire to do the same thing in their own communities.
In Hong Kong, our first Ride of Silence was in 2006, and every year since then cyclists have ridden together to remember others killed on our roads. Sadly the numbers are not coming down - in 2009 there were 10 more deaths, as there were in 2008.
