A Day of Sympathy and Reflection, A Day of Solidarity and Justice"

United Filipinos in Hong Kong, BAYAN HK and Gabriela HK舉辦

In relation to the recent August 23 hostage incident in Manila,
The Filipino Migrant Workers Union Hong Kong (FMWU-HK) offers their 12th anniversary as:

A Day of Sympathy and Reflection, A Day of Solidarity and Justice
Chater Road, Central, Hong Kong
August 29, 2010 (10:00AM-7:00PM)

Several events will happen on this day which we hope all of you can attend:

1) All-Filipino Inter-faith Gathering (10:00AM – 11:00AM)

On the first Sunday after the unfortunate incident, Filipinos of various faiths will lead an hour-long service for the victims and survivors of the August 23 Hostage Crisis. Leaders of different faiths will come together and express their unity with the rest of Hong Kong in mourning for the deaths of the nine victims and calling for justice.

2) Public Speak Out (11:00 AM – 6:00 PM)

The FMWU-HK will conduct a public speak-out that shall talk about the entire August 23 Hostage Crisis and how it has made an impact on the lives of both Hong Kong and Filipino people. As the whole event will be discussed, various migrant leaders will be invited to speak their minds and hearts on the issue.

We will also be inviting leaders of local Hong Kong organizations as well as local friends to speak.

3) People’s Vigil for Solidarity and Justice* (6:00 PM – 7:00 PM)

A candle-light vigil will gather both Filipinos and Hong Kong people to spend a time together
in expressing their sympathy and solidarity
as well as calling for justice for the victims and survivors of the August 23 incident.

The vigil will also relate the August 23 incident with the current human rights situation in the Philippines
whereby the Filipinos themselves are subjected to brutality, violence and negligence being instigated both by the police and military
as part of a political system that pronounces itself to be democratic.

A signature wall will be set up to encourage people to write messages and express themselves.

*The vigil is being organized by the FMWU HK together with HKCAHRPP, Association for the Advancement of Feminism, Asia Pacific Students and Youth Association, Justice and Peace Commission of the HK Catholic Diocese, HK Catholic Commission for Labour Affairs, Hong Kong Christian Council, United Filipinos in Hong Kong, BAYAN HK and Gabriela HK.

4) Other Highlights

a) A Photo-News Exhibit on the August 23 Hostage Crisis will be mounted to provide the Filipino migrant workers and other people a complete account of the August 23 hostage crisis.
b) Several pull-up panels on the Human Rights Situation in the Philippines will be set up side by side the exhibit. This will be hosted by the Hong Kong Campaign for the Advancement of Human Rights and Peace in the Philippines (HKCAHRPP).

We enjoin you to take part in this activity. Please do not forget to:
Join us on August 29 and invite your friends too.
Wear a black shirt on that day. We will be distributing white ribbons all throughout the day for you to put on your shirts。
