4G 的國際命名為LTE，5G為New Radio (NR)(註1)。
2017年12月3PPG通過了5G的非獨立組網功能，今天它通過了獨立組網功能，意味著全球的5G主要角逐者可以進入其商用階段。
The 3rd Generation Partnership Project（3GPP），由七個電信標準開發組織組成，以生成和定義通信上的國際技術報告和規範。
5G的全球主要角逐者大概有中國、美國、歐盟、日本和南韓。其中，中國是唯一的真正地由國家介入。在這場合，國家主義有一定優勢，因為它可以“若要成功先要瘋，頭腦簡單向前衝 ── 輸光了也不關我的事。中興、華為雖然是一國際大笑話，中國人聽不到的。況且，這影響不到中國建設其5G發射站（共享）、軟件平台、雲端服務、物流網、收費方式、操作系統等等。但有一個問題，2019年開始試商用，中國有否真正的自己的5G手機。
中國的未來主要的傳統行業已決定以互聯網主導，因此，盡快進入5G是一個合理的國策，這必然牽動香港。當中問題將迫使本土論述正視，不能泛政治地討論。
人民日報（註2）撰文，“按照工信部部署，我國將於2020年實現5G商用。目前，中國移動、中國電信、中國聯通三家基礎電信運營商企業已分別在國內多個城市展開5G試點，並計畫於2019年開始試商用，5G手機也計畫在明年推出。”
完整版5G標準正式出臺的通訊業的重大里程。600多名來自世界的主要電信運營商，網絡，終端和芯片組供應商，互聯網公司和其他垂直行業公司的名代表出席了5G發佈會的這一歷史性時刻。

New Radio (NR) Is the Name of the Air Interface
The wording New Radio or 5G NR might not be the most original, but it’s what the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is calling the output of Release 15. NR is equivalent to how the mobile communications industry has used LTE to describe 4G technology or UMTS to describe 3G technology. The draft specifications for Release 15 were approved in December 2017 and are expected to be finalized in mid-2019. Release 15 is just the start, as it establishes only phase one of a 5G mobile communication standard. Release 16 provides specifications for a second phase and is expected to be finalized in December 2019.

本報北京6月14日電 （記者王政）14日，3GPP（第三代合作夥伴項目）在美國舉行全體會議，正式批准凍結第五代移動通信技術標準（5G NR）獨立組網功能。鑒於5G非獨立組網標準已於去年12月凍結，至此，第一階段全功能完整版5G標準正式出臺，5G商用進入全面衝刺階段。
按照工信部部署，我國將於2020年實現5G商用。目前，中國移動、中國電信、中國聯通三家基礎電信運營商企業已分別在國內多個城市展開5G試點，並計畫於2019年開始試商用，5G手機也計畫在明年推出。
