Description of event:
Creative precincts have been high prestige attractions within urban regeneration projects, and in establishing city identity and global profile as part of economic restructuring and development. Another model which has proliferated within the last decade in China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, India and Taiwan, is the establishment of biennales and triennales. In some cases, these events take place within existing creative precincts and in other cases they occur in the absence of such a precinct as a more flexible form of cultural capital and prestige event. What approaches are available to study the links- and differences- between commercial culture and creativity in globalised urban spaces today? What role does the ‘über-curator’ play in the formation of taste associate with such events? What are the interests of artists and critics in these events? What are the limits of governmentality in the sphere of contemporary culture and does the bureaucratic state still have a role to play in cultural management in the era of networked society? This forum will bring together leading academics, artists and museum professionals to discuss the radical challenges of imagining and realizing creative preincts and contemporary art events and in guaranteeing critical discourse in contemporary culture.
