He had written books such as 〈我向總理說實話〉, which discloses the problems that the Chinese peasants are facing.
「農民真苦，農村真窮，農民真危險」李昌平在〈我向總理說實話〉一書中一語道破了現今中國農民的處境，這就是李氏在書中向總理朱鎔基所提及的「三農」問題。書中是李氏在湖北棋盤鄉擔任鄉黨委書記時對農民所面對的問題的經歷寫給中央領導人的寫實紀錄，藉此為農民作出控訴 --- 在改革開放之歷程中農民未能享受到當中的利益。此書發表後不但震驚中央領導人，而且在社會中引起了很大的影響，很多人認為李氏此書「刺痛了人們的良知」。
