Forum on “Reflections on the Tsunami:
Hong Kong’s Responsibilities and Contributions in a
Globalizing World”

 (【反思海嘯:全球化趨勢下香港的責任與承擔】論壇)

In light of the impact of the Asian tsunami, six
non-government organizations including Oxfam Hong Kong, SynergyNet, Hong Kong
People's Council for Sustainable Development, Hong Kong Policy Research
Institute, Civic Exchange and the Hong Kong Council of Social Service will hold
a forum of opinion leaders to reflect on the impact and lessons of this
catastrophe as well as Hong Kong’s response and role in this globalizing world
where even disasters seem to have taken a global scale.

The overwhelming response from the Hong Kong community to
help the tsunami victims has been most impressive, and there has been rising
awareness among some people that Hong Kong should be more active as a global
citizen. Under the ‘one country two systems’ framework, Hong Kong does not
conduct its own foreign policy, but it is given the autonomy to develop external
relations with other countries and cities. It is a full member of APEC. As part
of the developed world and being among the wealthier economies, Hong Kong
certainly needs to reflect on its global responsibilities and contributions. The
SAR government has a strategy on trade, finance, tourism with the neighbouring
countries, and Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa has the vision to build Hong Kong
as ‘Asia’s world city’. Should such bold vision incorporate our human
relationship with other parts of Asia as well, such as caring and sustainable
development?  We hope our forum can address these and other related
issues.
