Political crisis in Burma/Myanmar: What is to be done?

Political crisis in Burma/Myanmar: What is to be done?

ABSTRACT
Political crisis in Burma/Myanmar, sparked by economic hardship and fuelled by street protest, has focused global attention on a country that has now endured more than 45 years of repressive military-backed government. The seminar will examine key factors behind the current crisis and consider ways forward for international actors seeking to set the nation on the path to reform. It will argue for new forms of intervention that take policy responses beyond the bankrupt strategies of sanctions imposed by Western states and constructive engagement undertaken by Asian states.
