Rights Workers Trade Union Hong Kong (WorkRight Union)

1 May 2007

To all friends working in the human rights and other rights related fields:

Today is May Day. You are busy fighting for the rights of the underprivileged everyday, but have you ever stopped to consider your own rights, and whether you are being exploited at work?

For example,

You are helping low-income workers fight for reasonable working hours, but do you always have to work excessive overtime?

You are fighting for minimum wage for other workers, but do you know if your salaries are reasonable?

You are helping underprivileged groups fight for their rights, but how well do you handle any exploitation of your own rights by your superiors or the management of your organization?

You speak for the underprivileged and marginalized people, but when your rights are exploited, who speaks for you?

Do you wonder what the work environment and staff policies are like at other NGOs?

Would you like to meet other rights-based workers outside your own NGO?

WorkRight Union was established on May Day 2004. We fully understand that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a significant role in the development of the society, and that NGOs working on the issues of rights are critical for the development of a rights-based society. Yet, ironically, although workers in these NGOs work for the promotion of rights, they don't always enjoy the rights they are entitled to.

If you agree with what you read here, come and observe some of our meetings and get-togethers, and you are cordially invited to join our union to study together how to protect the rights of NGO workers in Hong Kong and improve our working conditions, while we are helping other underprivileged people to fight for their rights.

You can download our union's membership application form from our website (www.workrightunion.org.hk), see:

http://www.workrightunion.org.hk/membership_form_revised.zip

After today's demonstration, we will have a gathering at Club 71 in Central.
