Joint Statement by the Professionals
THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN: WITHDRAW THE EXTRADITION BILL!
On the 9th of June, hundreds of thousands of Hong Kong people marched against the Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019 (the “Extradition Bill”), and called for the Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, to step down. In blatant disregard of the people's voice, the government has tabled the bill for second reading, which is to take place on the 12th of June.
In the morning of 10 June, Carrie Lam raised four points in response to the march on the day before; her response lacked sincerity and indicated her intention to press forward with the legislation.
We condemn the government in the strongest possible terms for its deliberate disregard of strong public opposition to the bill and its apathy towards censure from all sides. The government must take primary responsibility for the conflict that ensued since it was provoked by the government’s scornful treatment of measured opposition.
We now demand that the government immediately withdraw its Extradition Bill, failing which, Carrie Lam must deliver on her campaign promise to resign because she no longer has the public’s support.
The people of Hong Kong stand steadfast in their opposition of the Extradition Bill and will not retreat until the administration takes proper account of public opinion and withdraw the bill.
In the face of political hubris, civil society must stand in resolute solidarity and exercise the power of the people. Those in power should respect the will of the many. Deprive us not of our human rights. The people have spoken, and the tide of public opinion cannot be suppressed.
