Anti-WTO activists in HK to draw up war plan

Chloe Lai

More than 100 anti-globalisation activists will arrive in Hong Kong this week to draft protest plans for the WTO's sixth ministerial conference in December.

They will join 70 local unionists, students, green activists and social workers at a City University seminar at the weekend to discuss the World Trade Organisation meeting. The seminar will be the first big gathering of anti-globalisation activists in Hong Kong.

Mabel Au Mei-po, spokeswoman for the Hong Kong People's Alliance on the World Trade Organisation, which will co-ordinate the campaign, said activists would also meet police to discuss protest arrangements.

Police last week said they had been stocking up on rubber bullets and sandbags to deal with any potential outbreak of violence during December's conference.

Ms Au said a demonstration would be held outside the Convention and Exhibition Centre when the conference opened on December 13. There would also be a big cultural carnival on the eve of the meeting, plus various education campaigns in the months ahead.

Activists coming this week include representatives of 100 labour unions, green groups and fishermen's and peasants' groups.

Groups include the Focus on Global South, Public Services International, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, the Alliance for Food Sovereignty Campaign and International Confederation of Free Trade Unions. But no representatives from radical groups such as Global Resistance and the World Development Movement would take part at this stage, Ms Au said.

After the meeting we will have a better idea of how many people will be coming to Hong Kong, she said.

We will ask police if they have a blacklist of activists, so we'll know who will not be able to come.
