Voices of Hong Kong's 2014 Protest | The New York Times 20141002

Ray Yep Kin-man, Professor of Public Policy, City University of Hong Kong:
I think what I saw today really surprised me because Hong Kong used to be described as a city of political apathy, but what I saw here is a big surprise, because you see all these young faces, I think they are in teen ages or early 20s, but they are so concerned for their own city and their own home, this is really encouraging.

Yep:
I think Hong Kong people are all very fed up with Beijing's brokden promise, not only this time but over the last 30 years. They keep saying that democracy will come, we have been very patient, but I think they break their promise again and again and again, I think Hong Kong people can't take it anymore and we need to make our voice heard.

Messages of support from Twitter are being projected on the sides of skyscrapers.
Twitter

Stand by you message:
Feel so touched seeing so many Hong Kong people step out, proud of you all! Though I'm in Mainland China, I support you all to the greatest extent, always stand by you! Hong Kong people add oil!!

Stand by you message:
You are not alone.
There was assembly in Boston in 1 Oct to support you all! You are not alone.

Michelle Wong, Flight attendant:
The feeling is that we are not working alone. And we know that we have many supporting voices to help us to stay strong and fight for what we are striking for - it's very touching. If they do not consider real options of democracy, Hong Kong will start to be a bigger part of China and will adopt Chinese policy. And we will be more influenced by China and will lose the characteristics of Hong Kong.

On the ground, people are covering walls with notes of encouragement. Tear gas and heavy rains have not driven away the protesters, many of whom have been sleeping on the streets throughout the occupation.

Yip Kin-leong, Restaurant worker:
I think I need to come out and support our people, and support our students. You really can't give up because of a little rain. I work in the food and beverage industry in a Sheung Wan restaurant. And I think since the students have fought for the future of workers like us, we have to support even more.

I think there will be some changes. The scale of the protest this time is so big. It will shake them, there will be changes. Maybe this will postpone and drag on... But the bottom line is they know we're not exactly powerless.

On Thursday morning, the crowds of protesters had thinned out. But organizers and protesters have not given up hope.

Yep:
I think we have made it very clear, not just to Beijing but people all over in the world, that's that we want: we want democracy. We made our point in a very civilized and peaceful way, so I think anybody heard us. Whether we get what we want, we'll have to wait and see, but I think, at least we try.
