Aw... That's a shame...

Is this for real? If it is, the lip sync is pretty damn good (I mean... even the breathing is sync.) And I thought the girl is 9 and not 7. Is this accurate?

I thought that scene was beautiful (even though the lyric was the modified from something less 'Olympic') and the girl is truly adorable, but this is a shame if it's true. When will they learn the virtue is in the truth and not the appearance of the truth. With all the fuss about fake composite pictures and the consequences of deception in public health information, they still haven't learn.

And how would that girl feel when she finds out? Poor thing...

It sounds like 「黃金甲」蔡素玉

It also sounds like Milli Vanilli

Milli Vanilli were a pop and dance music project formed by Frank Farian in Germany in 1988, fronted by Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus. The group's debut album achieved high sales internationally which earned them a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1990. The act sold over 30 million singles, 14 million albums and became one of the most popular pop acts in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, their success turned to infamy when their Grammy was revoked after it was revealed that the actual vocals on the record were not the voices of Morvan and Pilatus. In 1998, ten years after Milli Vanilli's debut, Pilatus was found dead in a Frankfurt hotel of an apparent drug overdose.(Wiki)

Some other views...

I think there are two issues here. Action and intent. I think the act of pursuing perfection or greatness alone is understandable and sometimes even admirable. But as 阿藹 already said, the intent use of these perfect imagery is problematic. And when the Politburo is involved, this is not "just a show" any more. (Believe me, I don't go to the movies and complain about the special effects being fake.)

What I want to explore further is the act itself. Let's for the moment ignore the intent and accept the pursue of perfection, is this act of manipulation acceptable? Alternatively, can something be perfect when it is not authentic? Or further (may be a bit of a stretch here), can winning athletes be counted as winners if they were doped up with performance enhancing drugs? I think the answer for all these questions is no. I think we should be as critical about the act of distorting reality as much as the intent of the act. To me, this voice replacement is as deplorable as all those fake photo composites and fake historical/heritage buildings.

And the stupidest thing about this manipulation is that, it probably wouldn't have mattered at all if they did nothing (if they didn't replace the voice.) The whole thing really only mattered in the mind of the Politburo member. When in reality, it's just a cute kid singing damn it! Talk about the politicization of the game eh :-).

Um... apparently the 29 footprints scene is also somewhat fake:

But I think I can accept this as special effects.

Taking the fun out of the Games

JamesRose/The Standard August 11, 2008

The Games are only a few days old, but already China is struggling. ...

The governance and media culture of the Sydney Games had one vital result: it engaged the people of Sydney and Australia. Central to this engagement was the troop of some 47,000 volunteers who provided assistance, especially while the Games were on. The Sydney Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games was quite open in deciding to essentially step back from running the show and in allowing the public to take ownership of it. This conscious choice to allow the Games to be a "People's Games" led to the Sydney Games' legendary laid-back feel, sense of humor and its human-scale vibe.
...
There's a well-known case, as an example of the atmosphere of the Sydney Games, involving the blue line that was painted through the city to mark the marathon course. One morning, organizing committee members were taking phone calls from people confused as to its position. It turns out that, during the wee hours, some wags had altered the line to have the runners heading in the front door of a local pub. What's even more indicative is that the SOCOG actually saw the humor and no-one was charged. That sort of prank might well result in a national scandal in China.

If the Beijing Games are to succeed, it will have at least as much to do with the people as with the officials. Beijing's problem is that it simply cannot allow its people to be who they are, and will not allow their culture - especially its media - to be open enough to inject some reality into the proceedings.

It's true that Sydney in 2000 was prior to 9/11 and the myriad security compulsions this has created. Yet, while the Beijing Games are probably as security heavy as the 1980 Moscow Games, they probably would have been anyway, given Beijing's enduring paranoia.

The Beijing Games will not be among the best, not because of the people but because their leaders won't get out of their way.

"Art for art's sake is an empty phrase. Art for the sake of the true, art for the sake of the good and the beautiful, that is the faith I am searching for."
