We are citizens who care about Hong Kong politics, culture and history. We have insisted in staying in Star Ferry Pier for two days and win the support of the general public. The support does not only stem from a request to preserve a piece of architecture, but also the anger stirred up by the recent mode of development which ruins Hong Kong politics, culture and economy. Therefore, we give out this declaration and hope Hong Kong citizens, including the media and the workers in the construction site in Star Ferry would understand our ideal is not just a ‘Star Ferry Complex’ or nostalgia. Also, we request the police to abandon prosecution immediately.

The Government carries out Fake Consultation and sides with the Big Business, Ignoring Public Opinion:

First, the government claims that decision was done 10 years ago and it consulted the Antiquities and Monuments Office. However, the media found that the report of the Antiquities and Monuments Office reminded the government several years ago that the demolishment of the Star Ferry Pier would definitely lead to the discontent of the citizens and cause social conflicts. But the government ignores the comment and prioritizes building the bypass and the business buildings, ranking profit of the big business the first. It hides the report of the Antiquities and Monuments Office. This shows the hypocrisy of the ‘consultation’.

Second, the government claims that the planning has consulted citizens, but how many Hong Kong citizens are really told about this and know how to take part in planning? How many citizens know that the government ‘really hopes the people to take part in planning’? Piles after piles of documents are buried in the Town Planning Board and Planning Department and take tons of effort for the citizens to find them. Is this really ‘open consultation’ and ‘respecting public opinion’?

Respect Historical Culture and Culture of the People starts from Preserving Star Ferry Pier

Buildings become a part of collective memory and culture of the society after being used by the people and various historical events. Can a society have future without thinking of the past and, without history?

This serious problem is not only reflected in the Star Ferry Pier problem, but also the ‘urban renewal’ in the old districts and small communities. We are going to lose Lee Tung Street (Wedding Card Street)in Wan Chai; the ‘Blue Houses’ in Wan Chai may become fake antiques; the small communities in Sham Shui Po, Tai Kok Tsui and Tsuen Wan are going to be replaced by screen-style skyscrapers, luxurious buildings and large shopping centres. This inevitably affects the living rights of the aborigines and expels many neighbours with rich local historical knowledge. Then the people there lose their homes, and we lose precious cultural capital. Not to mention the Hong Kong government, which gives 200 billion dollars of Hong Kong people to the multinational corporation Disney. And it allows Disney to damage the environment and human geography in Lantau Island. How brazen the government is!

Many of us concern about these issues apart from the Star Ferry Pier problem, and witness the collusion between the government and business. The citizens are bullied and we are angry about this!

A city which does not respect its historical culture and the people who build history is so hollow culturally. Nothing will be left except consumerism. If this goes on, Hong Kong will become a city with only buying and selling – a city without a soul.

As the collusion between the government and business is serious, the government never thinks about local culture and ignores public opinion. Civil disobedience is the way the people could participate in what affects them. What citizens can do is to stop the construction work for a little while, so as to raise the consciousness of the people and force the government to face the problem through civil disobedience. People taking part is the action just want to have a basic grasp about the living environment around them – this is what democratic society means.

Therefore, the action is really a way of democratic participation of city planning.
But how did our “people oriented”government treat us? Yesterday, protesters had announced that they should leave after Suen Ming Yeung met with Legislative Councilors, and police said that protestors could wait in the site in the afternoon. However, the police lied. While the debate was still processing in the LEGCO, and Suen had not responsed yet, police took violent action against us suddenly.We cannot tolerate the violent treatment by the police and of course, arresting the protestor to oppress the citizens taking part in democratic participation of planning through legal procedures. The police live on the people but they threaten the people. This is really a shame. We express strong condemnation and request the drop of charges at once!

The Star Ferry Pier is given to the Government and it is owned by the public. However, when the protestors entered the construction site yesterday, the police did not deal with them but told the construction workers to do so! We participate in the action for the Hong Kong citizens, including the workers in the construction site. The police stir up the conflicts between us and the workers and we feel extremely angry about this!

Our requests:
1. Stop all demolishing work NOW;
2. Suen Ming Yuen meets the concerned groups and citizens immediately to discuss an alternative planning which allows development and preserves the Star Ferry Pier;
3. Abandon all the prosecutions against any protestors Now;
4. The government should take practical procedures and open all documents regarding future planning to the citizens. It should also think of ways for citizens with different education levels to access to information and take part in discussion without unnecessary difficulties;
5. Stop development involving collusion of the government and business and respect history and culture.

從昨天的行動, 我們可以清楚的看到沒有民意基礎的政府是怎麼樣。
是時候把行動伸延到討論民主的層面了

我對呢句很有保留。何以見得「全香港的市民」都想保留鐘樓？你地自己一廂情願覺得係就係？

the protest should be more creative, like ask some young and fit men to line up before the pier and then undress one by one until completely naked.

it's so symbolic that the crack down of the pier is just like undressing our memory. if the protest was done in this way, many people here will be willing to give their support and i will go there in person to support them. a greater coverage in the international media will be enjoyed. protest in nude is more desirable. please consider.

what the use of just sitting in front of the police vehicle? What the use of Candle Night? You social activists, please brainstorm yourself, be creative and original. don't just copy those dramas in the past. Show your bodies and gain respect and support from the public. The public is tired of what you have done and the tears and force. Why not hold a male strippers night? Candle Night is a very lazy and uneffective show.

While you condemn those offcials cannot think out of the box and have no creativity, you social activists have no creativity at all- this is what the old saying says: 50-step laughs at 100-step.

Those young and smart men should be at least topless and then strip down. even with underpants only is more seductive and the whole situation will be more unmanagable. if some of them show off their dicks, then the whole protest will turn into a juicy comedy. the whole campaign will become a text to study in a critical theory seminar.

Be creative, my men, I hope this drama would be effective, entertaining and memorable. Let's show your erected hot dicks in front of the pier in order to replace the fall of the Clock Tower!

清拆天星碼頭再次反映政府對文物保育意識薄弱，碼頭作為香港的重要地標及港人的重要集體回憶，從文化、社會、經濟均有重大意義。
近幾年，舊區重建、舊建築清拆已令香港近幾十年的歷史見證所餘無幾，只保留百年的古建築，香港的文物便會出現斷層。地方和建築盛載的是可以不斷延續下去的歷史，讓不同年代的人對同一社會產生感情。
碼頭消失了，集體回憶消失了，感情消失了，我們的根在哪裏？我們的家在哪裏？
當香港成了只有摩天住宅、商廈、大型商場的地方，以及一大堆用錢堆砌的新地標，香港還有什麼特色？除了賺錢和消費，香港還有什麼值得香港人去留戀？
