The speaker will talk about his involvement with human rights work, about the difference between voluntary human rights work and being a barrister doing “human rights cases”, and about problems and pitfalls of being a human rights barrister.
Paul Harris, the author of The Right to Demonstrate was born in England and educated at Lincoln College, Oxford. He is a Senior Counsel in Hong Kong. He began his career as a Home Office official, which included a period working in the Police Department. After working for the then British Overseas Development Administration, he became a practising barrister in London and was the founding chairman of the England & Wales Bar’s Human Rights Committee. In Hong Kong, he founded Human Rights Monitor, the territory’s main human rights organisation. He has undertaken human rights missions in many countries, including Malawi, Colombia, Nepal and East Timor. He is married to Helen Cheung and lives in Hong Kong.
